Navigating the BIG Challenge – Part 3

In our last post, we discussed the second technique Daisy Dowling recommended to tackle the BIG challenge of working parenthood. In this post, we will move on to her third technique: Revise Your Bucket.

The Third Technique: Revise Your Buckets

This technique is another way to help you manage the time challenge. Parental and professional tasks make up a large part of your day and can be the source of profound stress associated with being a working parent. If you feel this pinch for time, whether that be for both or one set of tasks, Daisy Dowling suggests using the Three Bucket Technique.

The Three Bucket Technique is a technique to help you navigate the time challenge a little bit better by dividing your tasks into three buckets. Bucket #1 consists of tasks that only you can do because nobody can do these tasks for you. Bucket #2 consists of tasks that you can delegate or get help on but still oversee. Lastly, Bucket #3 consists of tasks that you can say goodbye to, don’t want to do, or get rid of.

While moving forward through your career and family life, on the verge of new opportunities, or feeling the pressure of the time challenge, make small changes to your buckets. Take a step back and see what tasks you can move from Bucket #1 to Bucket #2 (and so forth) to “create more capacity for something new or create more time for yourself at work and home.”
